News 2005
1/2/2006 | HSC Holiday: Happy New Year! The Highlands Study Center is taking a holiday today. We'll be back tomorrow if you need to contact us. Of course, you can leave a message at 877-878-2238 today and we'll get back to you tomorrow.
12/13 | You'll Soon Be Getting another Tape CD Close on the heels of the last three Basement Tapes, the last for 2005—Salvation's Dawn—is now also in the mail to our monthly supporters.

12/12 | ETC in the mail! The next installment of Every Thought Captive is in the mail today.

Church Planters Camp Cancelled The Church Planters Camp scheduled for March 17-18, 2006, has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause anyone. We hope to revisit the possibility of holding a Church Planters Camp in the near future. Stay tuned...
12/9 | You'll Soon Be Getting a Tape CD The long-awaited installments of the Basement Tapes—Patriots and Scoundrels, The Tongue and Coram Deo —are in the mail to those folks who have committed to supporting us monthly. We call this our 'you get a tape' program. But, since we're so anti-programs, you don't even get a tape... it's a CD.
Contact us, if you'd like to start a conversation about supporting the work of the Highlands Study Center.
12/8 | Generations Conference Filling Up Generations: Giving Honor to Whom Honor is Due, the third annual Family Conference, hosted by Saint Peter Presbyterian Church and the Highlands Study Center is filling up nicely. As of today, we have over 400 men, women and children signed up to join us in May at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia. With six months to go, it's quite possible we could fill the capacity of our venue. Please come join us for what promise to be an historic conference, featuring fathers-and-sons, Howard & Doug Phillips, and Drs. R. C. Sproul Sr. & Jr. For more information, visit our conference page.
12/5 | Stuff You Can't Get... Yet! Many folks have asked about the availability and packaging of the early Basement Tapes and Tuesday Night Bible Studies, now that Draughthorse Press is no more.
We are still in the discussion phase of offering "box sets" of Basement Tapes. The reason there are currently no sets of Basement Tapes listed is we don’t currently have any of the Basement Tapes prior to 2005 available for sale. And since 2005 isn’t complete, yet, it’s also not possible to offer those as a boxed set.
As for Sound Teaching (formerly Tuesday Night Bible Study), the new ones will be available as they’re completed. The old ones are in the mix with the old Basement Tapes to be remastered and have new covers, as Cumberland Books owns the rights to the older cover art. If we do decide to package Basement Tapes together, it will be after they're all remastered and re-covered.
Our target is to have all of the pre-2005 Basement Tapes rolled out by our Generations conference in May; as many of the earlier Sound Teaching sets as possible done by then; and the remainder of the Sound Teaching complete before the Fall of '06. It's a large undertaking and we're certainly eager to have it done as soon as possible. And we appreciate everyone's patience.
If you watch the "Stuff You Can Get" page (pg. 12) of each ETC, you'll see when items become available. For a more up-to-the-minute look, keep an eye on the online catalog and our homepage, which will announce new offerings as soon as they're available.
As a bonus for reading this entire explanation, I'll tell you a secret of some stuff you can get. HSC T-shirts and sweatshirts are still available through Cafe Press.
11/18 | New Stuff You Can Get: R. C. Didn't Write It... ...But Here's What He Thinks Longtime friends of the Highlands Study Center, Scott and Kris Wightman have just released a new book, College Without Compromise, which we're pleased to carry in our "online" store. In his travels to homeschooling conferences around the country, R. C. has been asked alot of questions. But the most common among homeschoolers is: "What about college?" The Wightmans have answered that question for Christian homeschoolers, offering hope, joy and direction. You don't have to sacrifice your convictions when it comes to college.

11/17 | Christmas Eve Celebration Saint Peter Presbyterian Church will be celebrating the Advent of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 6:00PM, Saturday, December 24th, at the King College Chapel in Bristol, Tennessee. We invite everyone in the area to join us.

11/14 | What's Happening? Couples Camp was a big success, with the exception of the picnic food arriving late on Thursday. Many of the campers said they were glad it was late because it gave them more time to get to know folks from Saint Peter. Thank God He's sovereign! I'll take the blame for the food failure and give Him the glory for the friendships forged during the wait. We had couples from as far away as Hawaii and Ontario, and as close as Georgia and Florida. (The Morgans were able to join us after all, though a little late.)
Tuesday Night Bible Study has wrapped up for the year. We'll resume on January 24 with "More Wisdom From Lewis." Clive Staples, that is.
Basement Tapes are continuing to roll off the presses. Our monthly supporters will soon be getting Basement Tape #43: Patriots and Scoundrels, and Basement Tape #44: The Tongue will follow close behind.
Both can be pre-ordered from our online catalog.
RC's Speaking Schedule is now up-to-date. Check to see if he's going to be near you.
Pastors Camp, scheduled for early January at Hungry Mother State Park, is already full. We're looking forward to hosting 5 pastors this time, along with an elder from each of their congregations.
Church Planters Camp. Are you doing "home church;" holding a Bible study that has hopes of being a church plant; faithfully attending church but believe God may be calling you to plant a church; or a pastor answering the call to plant a church? Then, let Jim Bob know that you'd like to join us March 17-18 in Mendota for our first Church Planters Camp. Our good friend James McDonald, pastor of Family Reformation Fellowship, and publisher of Homeschooling Today Magazine, will join R.C. in presenting this camp. The cost is $150/person and you decide how many from your core group you want to bring. Like Couples Camp, your meals will be included.
The last Every Thought Captive of 2005 will go to the printer this week, a little behind schedule, but our hope is that it will be in mailboxes before the end of the month. We're already working on our next issue, which will be the first of our Tenth Anniversary volume.
Third Sunday Picnic is coming up next Lord's Day. Come worship with us and then come eat some great food! If you're planning a visit, this is one of the best opportunities to meet the families of all three parishes of Saint Peter Presbyterian Church.
11/9 | Extreme Last Minute Opening at Couples Camp With less than 12 hours before camp begins, I have an opening for Fall Couples Camp, which begins at 8:30AM tomorrow morning with breakfast at the Sprouls'. So, if you can do either of the following, let us know: 1) E-mail Jim Bob by 7AM EDT Thursday that you can be in Mendota by 9AM Thursday and stay through Saturday, or 2) if you're in the Hogansville, GA, area and can fill in for Barry Morgan tomorrow, call him NOW, so they can get on the road!
Also, please be praying for the 4-yr-old son of the Campbells, whose pneumonia kept them from coming.
11/8 | Last Tuesday Night Bible Study of 2005 Tonight's lecture will be a makeup from the series Believing God entitled "We shall be like Him." We will start a new series—tentatively called More Wisdom From Lewis—January 24.
11/7 | ...And A Good Time Was Had By All Thanks to everyone who came out for our Barn Dance and Reformation Celebration festivities. We enjoyed square dancing and kettle corn on Friday. And lots of folks came out to visit in Mendota on Saturday. Thanks to everyone who had a booth and to everyone who came out to celebrate with us!
10/28 | Generations brochures are in and making their debut at the 2005 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival. [download the PDF]
10/27 | R.C. Addresses Attendees at the SAICFF
During the opening ceremonies of the 2005 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival, R.C. reminds us that the serpent was more crafty than all the other beasts, and therefore we need to make sure we're deliberate in wielding the weapons of our warfare: Truth, Beauty and Righteousness.
He'll elaborate more on those themes over the next couple of days, as well as host the Young Filmmakers screenings. Stop by the Highlands Study Center booth in the vendor hall and say, 'Hi.'
10/20 | You'll Soon Be Getting a Tape CD The next installment of the Basement Tapes—All in the Family; a Conversation about Family-Integration vs. Age-Segregation—is in the mail to those folks who have committed to supporting us monthly. We call this our 'you get a tape' program. But, since we're so anti-programs, you don't even get a tape... it's a CD.
Contact us, if you'd like to start a conversation about supporting the work of the Highlands Study Center.
10/19 | You can dance if you want to, but don't leave your friends behind. The first weekend in November Saint Peter Presbyterian Church and the Highlands Study Center will be celebrating the grand grace of God in grand style.
Friday evening, November 4, at 7:00 we will be hosting our annual Barn Dance. Bring your wife, your children, warm clothes, but leave your inhibitions at home. We'll dance square and we'll reel. We will have a good time.
November 5, in Mendota, we will have our annual Reformation Celebration. We will have booths with fair food (that is, the great food a body gets at fairs), hand-crafted stuff, games and maybe even Basement Tapes. We will have a chili cook-off, a homebrew contest, the reading of the 95 Theses, a bonfire with s'mores, and the telling of the story of Martin Luther.
For directions to either event, or with questions, please feel free to call us at 877-878-2238 or email .
10/18 | Tuesday Night Bible Study Tonight! RC will continue his series on The Ones We Missed From Previous Series tonight at the SDA church in Bristol. Tonight's topic will be from the Twelve Promises the Bible Makes series: Psalm 37.
10/17 | New Stuff You Can Get: After Darkness, Light: Distinctives of Reformed Theology
10/16 | Third Sunday Picnic will be in the Lions pavilion at Sugar Hollow Park. Take exit 7, and turn toward Wal-Mart. Turn right on Lee Hwy, it's about a mile up on the left. Once you enter the park, go to the right, through the gate, up the hill, over the river and through the woods... past the guard shack (pay $1) toward the back of the park. Look for a bunch of 15-passenger vans and lots of children!
10/11 | Tuesday Night Bible Study Tonight! RC will begin his series on The Ones We Missed From Previous Series tonight at the SDA church in Bristol. Tonight's topic will be from the Texts That Trouble: Six Passages That Make Reformed Folks Uneasy series.
10/10 | We Thought We Were On The List Probably the most common email I've gotten since I joined the staff of the Highlands Study Center in March is something along the lines of... "We used to be on the list but haven't gotten an Every Thought Captive in a long time." That's most likely because the last time a purge was done, you didn't catch the notice asking you to let us know if you wanted to keep getting ETC. (We don't want to send it folks who don't want it.) So, look around your house. If you don't have an issue from the last year or so, drop us an email. We'd love to put you back on the list.
10/7 | Generations Conference Filling Up Before we even have our brochure done, we already have 60 families (that’s almost 280 people, for those of you doing the math) signed up. We’ve extended the Early Bird rate. As soon as our brochure is ready, I’ll update the downloadable registration form with the new price. Until then, if you’d like to come or have friends that you’d like to bring, it's still only $40/person and a whole family of four (or more) can come for only $160. We’re excited about this landmark conference and look forward to seeing you there!
10/5 | Fall Couples Camp Sells Out If you’re registered for Camp, your confirmation letter, along with a schedule, directions and other information went in the mail today.
We do have a waiting list and, though it’s rare, some folks have to drop out at the last minute. If you can handle coming on very short notice and want an opportunity to come in November, call Jim Bob.
Our next camp, Summer Couples Camp 2006, is tentatively scheduled for July 13-15. We’re not taking reservations, yet, but I wanted you to check the dates if you’d like to come.
10/4 | New Stuff You Can Get: Your Gold to Refine Conference CDs
Oh, and that ETC that just went in the mail; please ignore its Stuff page; it just went obsolete.
10/3 | ETC’s Stuff You Can Get page goes high-tech! Our former neighbors at Draughthorse Press are heading in a new direction. Having already relocated to Kentucky to live their dream on a thirty-acre farm, the Saenzes are taking the next step and changing the focus of their offerings, as well as their company name. They will no longer be carrying Highlands Study Center-related materials. That’s the bad news.
The good news is: we will be carrying all the early Basement Tapes, as well as the new ones; Sound Teaching (formerly Tuesday Night Bible Study) sets; and, of course, R.C.’s books.

The bad news is: they’re not all yet available. Watch this space for announcements on when they’re ready for purchase.
And shop our new online catalog to see what is available now.
9/29 | ETC in the mail! The next installment of Every Thought Captive is in the mail today.

8/9 | Bible Study Cancelled! There will be no Tuesday Night Bible Study tonight, August 9.
6/30 | Camp Picnic/Softball Game Couples Camp picnic will be held at Steele Creek Park in Bristol, TN at 5PM. Softball will follow around 7PM.
6/22 | Come to our Annual Ice Cream Social As is our tradition, we will be holding an Ice Cream Social on Friday night of Couples Camp. This year, we’ll be in Mendota; in fact we’ve invited everyone in Mendota.
We’ll provide the ice cream, you bring your favorite topping to the Mendota Community Center at 7PM, July 1, 2005. (BTW, that also happens to be R.C.’s 40th Birthday. Expect cake!)
Basement Tapes
The long-awaited Basement Tapes are finally in the mail to our monthly supporters. We
say, "finally," because you have all been so patient to support us for the last few months on
what had become the increasingly-misnamed "You Get A Tape" list. Well, no more. You ARE getting
tapes (OK, they’re actually CDs... so perhaps it’s still misnamed)... the first 5
oops, 4 of the first five Basement Tapes for 2005. Two other things we’d like to say: We’re
sorry! and Thank you! The first we included in a letter, the latter we have said by including a
set of R.C.s Bible Study, Further Up and Further In which is an 8-CD set on C. S. Lewis’
Chronicles of Narnia. We hope you enjoy them. Also, the third Basement Tape (the one that’s missing) and the sixth Basement Tape will also be in the mail soon. Watch for them!
6/20 | No Tuesday Night Bible Study Tuesday Night Bible Study at the SDA church in Bristol will resume on July 5. Stay tuned for topic information...
6/8 | Couples Camp Closed Our opening for Summer Couples Camp is now filled.
6/7 | Couples Camp Opening We have ONE opening available for Summer Couples Camp, June 30-July2. Call or email us if you want to come!
6/6 | To promote its NICHE conference, KWKY in Des Moines will be interviewing R.C. Monday, June 6, at 8 a.m. (CDT). R.C. will be a keynote speaker at the conference.
5/14 | No Picnic!
There will be no 3rd Sunday picnic tomorrow, the 15th.
5/3 | Summer Camp is full...
but we do have a waiting list, and we are taking reservations for Fall Camp as well.
4/16 | Another change of venue
Worship tomorrow morning, like the conference this weekend, will be held tomorrow morning at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center at the usual time (9:45 a.m.) instead of the Bristol SDA church. [directions]
4/13 | Change of venue
Our 2005 conference, Your Gold to Refine, will be held at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center instead of the location previously announced. [directions]
4/4 | Tuesday Night
There will be no Bible study this week. The kickoff Tuesday Night Bible Study series on 12 passages Reformed people don’t believe has been postponed until next week.
3/2 | Conference brochure
A brochure for our 2005 conference, Your Gold to Refine, can be downloaded here. (PDF download requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.)
2/19 | Tuesday Night
There will be no Tuesday Night Bible Study this coming week. The courtship series will resume the following Tuesday (3/1).
1/29 | Tuesday Nights
This past Tuesday night inaugurated R.C.’s first new Tuesday Night Bible Study, and series, of 2005—the yet unnamed series on courtship. If you are interested, be sure not to come next week (2/1) or the week after that (2/8), since we aren’t meeting. But do join us for Part Two on the 15th.
1/29 | Worship Services Cancelled
Due to weather conditions, Sunday morning services for tomorrow (both Bristol and Mendota) as well as the evening study have been canceled.
