The Power of the Glory

October 30-31, 2008
Gary Demar • R.C. Sproul Jr. • Laurence Windham

Our goal with this conference is to help us to see the biblical doctrine of the kingdom not as an interesting thing to argue about, but as an integral part of our own growth in grace. We want to go away not merely with an expanded understanding of sound eschatology, but with a bigger vision of the glory of Christ. We want to not merely jettison the notion that seeking to make known the reign of Christ is polishing the brass on a sinking ship, but to in turn, out of a love for our husband/king, have a passion for removing the blots and blemishes that mar us. We want to go away changed, because we have seen His glory.

Our Speakers

Gary Demar

Dr. Gary Demar grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Western Michigan University (1973) and earned his M.Div. at Reformed Theological Seminary in 1979. He earned his Ph.D. in Christian Intellectual History from Whitefield Theological Seminary in 2007. Gary has lived in the Atlanta area since 1979 with his wife Carol. They have two grown sons. Gary and Carol are members of Midway Presbyterian Church (PCA).
Gary is the host of two nationally syndicated radio shows: History Unwrapped — a 60-second vignette heard on more than 300 stations and The Gary DeMar Show-heard every Saturday in several major markets including Sirius Satellite Radio.
Gary is also a prolific writer, having authored over twenty books covering a full range of topics, including Ruler of the Nations, War of the Worldviews, Something Greater Is Here, and Is Jesus Coming Soon?
Gary has been interviewed by Time magazine, CNN, MSNBC, FOX, the BBC, and Sean Hannity. He has done numerous radio and television interviews, including the "Bible Answer Man," hosted by Hank Hanegraaff.

Visit Gary Demar at the American Vision website.

R.C. Sproul Jr.

Dr. R.C. Sproul is a graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary, and Grove City College, did graduate studies in English at Ole Miss ("did graduate studies" is code for investing two years and coming out with nothing), and received his Doctorate of Ministry in 2001. R.C. is a teaching elder of Saint Peter Presbyterian Church, and Founder, Chairman and Teacher of the Highlands Study Center. He has written or edited nine books, and contributed to several others. He once wrote for World magazine, and for the Covenant Syndicate. The important thing is that he is the husband of Denise, and the father of Darby, Campbell, Shannon, Delaney, Erin Claire, Maili, and Reilly. At the Highlands Study Center, R.C. teaches the Tuesday Night Bible study for the community, most of the Highlands Academy classes, the Highlands Hall ministerial program, and serves as executive editor of Every Thought Captive.

Laurence Windham

Laurence Windham has served as senior pastor at Saint Peter Presbyterian Church and the Director of Student Affairs at the Highlands Study Center. Before coming to work here he studied at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, worked at Ligonier Ministries, and served as a campus minister at the University of Central Florida for Reformed University Fellowship (the campus ministry of the Presbyterian Church in America). The important thing is that he is the husband of Angela, and the father of Lauren, Alayna, Ethan, Garrett, and Miles. At the Highlands Study Center Laurence runs the college ministry (which includes, among other things, feeding, teaching and counseling a bevy of young men) and serves as the associate editor of Every Thought Captive. In addition Laurence serves as the senior pastor at Saint Peter church.

Special Musical Guest

Nathan Clark George

Nathan Clark George
Named Indie Heaven's Acoustic Artist of the Year for the past two years, Nathan seamlessly blends contemporary folk, AC and finger-style guitar work into one. With self-penned songs like "Don't I Know," which is Nathan's honest declaration of his failings as a parent, to the poignant old hymn, "Not What My Hands Have Done," Nathan draws his audiences in with stellar guitar ability and honest, heart-felt vocals based on the Scriptures and his own family experience - both the joys and the struggles."
Over the last several years, Nathan has presented hundreds of concerts at camps, churches, coffee houses, and homes, where his music is appreciated by both the young and old. He continues to defy the contemporary/traditional distinctions, and crosses generational boundaries with ease. And this is part of the goal - to encourage a multi-generational vision for the family and the Kingdom of Peace through a truly musical presentation of the Scriptures and transparent snapshots of life that are convicting, yet full of hope.

Give Nathan Clark George a listen to. Here are some links to his discography, music, videos, and more.

Schedule of Events

Thursday Evening Sessions

6:00–7:00 — In the Garden by R.C. Sproul Jr.
This talk will focus on the nature of the kingdom in the garden. It will argue that Adam and Eve were called to be God's vice-regents, to make known His glory. It will affirm that the dominion mandate is the very core of our calling, and that it hasn't changed. Finally, it will emphasize that the glory of the garden wasn't the beauty, or the peace, or the fruit, but that God walked with Adam in the cool of the evening.
7:15–8:00 — All the Nations by Laurence Windham
This talk will look at the glorious scope of the promise to Abraham, affirming that a globe encompassing kingdom was always God's plan A. It will argue that Israel was placed strategically to bless the whole world. It will in turn look to the arrival of the Queen of Sheba as a typological fulfillment of this promise from God. It will affirm that our faith has been outward looking from the beginning.
8:15–9:00 — A New Covenant by Gary DeMar
This talk will explore how the promise of the new covenant is the announcement of a great advance in the kingdom of God. It will in turn emphasize the significance of the giving of the Holy Spirit, and His indwelling of the saints. It should affirm the continuity of the covenants, while also affirming the radical change that would come with the coming of the Messiah.

Friday Morning Sessions

9:00–10:00 — Repent for the Kingdom by Gary DeMar
This talk will emphasize the biblical truth that the good news is the good news of the kingdom of God. It will look to the connection of our repentance and the coming of the kingdom. It will look at as well the pronouncement that Jesus told the disciples to tell John, that the blind see, the lame walk, etc. When we understand the good news is about the kingdom, our vision expands beyond merely getting our souls saved. This talk should expand that vision as well.
10:15–11:00 — The Third Day of Thermodynamics by R.C. Sproul Jr.
This talk will argue that from the fall onward the world was getting worse and worse, but that with the resurrection of Jesus that process suddenly changed directions. It will explore what it means that Jesus is the firstborn of the new creation, arguing that all history began again in the new garden, where Jesus was raised again as the new Adam.
11:15–12:00 — Let the Nations Be Glad by Gary DeMar
This talk will affirm that with the binding of Satan the kingdom now moves into all the world in power. It will explore how God did this in and through the destruction of Jerusalem. It will in turn look to the worldwide mission movement, affirming not only that God is at work bringing all things under subjection, but that He has graciously called us to be His Eve, a helper suitable to the second Adam.

Friday Afternoon Sessions

1:30–2:15 — Questions and Answers with all speakers
2:30–3:15 — Washing with the Water of the Word Laurence Windham
This talk will affirm that Jesus is even now about the business, in His glorious reign, of purifying His bride. He does this through the washing of the Word. He does this through His intercessory prayer on our behalf, and He does this as our king, as the confession says, bringing all His and our enemies under subjection. His reign at the right hand is the very source of our faith that He will make us more like Him.
3:30–4:15 — And He Shall Reign by R.C. Sproul Jr.
This talk will explore eternity, affirming not that Jesus will rule 1000 years over Israel, but forever over the new heavens and the new earth. It will likewise affirm that eternity is more than heaven, but is also the new earth. Finally, it will argue that all that we do in the here and now for His glory will survive the refining fire, and will make it into eternity. It will exhort us to work diligently now, because right now counts forever.

Friday Evening

6:45–8:00 — Worship
As we begin our celebraton of the Reformation, we remember God's blessings with worship.
8:00– — Concert Nathan Clark George
After the conference and worship, our attendees will be invited to enjoy a Highlands Study Center favorite, Nathan Clark George.
